What is malnutrition

Malnutrition is simply known as bad nourishment. It  is the lack of proper nutrition which is caused by eating foods which does not contain the right amount of nutrition needed by the body. Its usually characterised by physical or mental deformities.

Malnutrition isn’t only about been undernourished but also been over nourished.

Also, it is a major health problem, especially in developing countries.  Furthermore, been malnourished doesn’t  only concern   not  enough good nutrition. But also too much food but the  wrong types of food.

It also depends on  the body’s response to a wide range of infections that results in malabsorption of nutrients or the inability to use nutrients properly to maintain health.

Clinically,it  is characterised by inadequate or excess intake of protein, energy and micronutrients such as vitamins  and the frequent infections and disorders that result.

People are malnourished if they’re not able to utilize  fully the food they eat. For example, due to diarrhoea or other illnesses(secondary malnutrition),or if their diet does not provide adequate calories and protein for  growth and maintenance (undernutrition).

Statistics on malnutrition

Malnutrition causes about 300,000 deaths each year worldwide.  It is also responsible for about half deaths among young children each year. This is  especially found in developing countries. It increases the risk of malaria, diarrhoea, and respiratory tract infections.

Poor kids suffering from malnutrition

According to the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION,every  country in the world is affected by one or more forms of malnutrition. Combating malnutrition in all its forms is one of the greatest global health challenges.

Women, infants, children, and adolescents are at particular risk of malnutrition. Optimizing nutrition early in life—including the 1000 days from conception to a child’s second birthday—ensures the best possible start in life, with long-term benefits.

Poverty amplifies the risk of, and risks from, been malnourished. People who are poor are more likely to be affected by different forms of malnutrition. Also, it increases health care costs, reduces productivity, and slows economic growth. This can perpetuate a cycle of poverty and ill-health.
